''Design your destiny...."
NLP is short for Neuro-Linguistic-programming.
It originated in the early 70's through the pioneering work of John
Grinder & Richard Bandler who studied what was needed to excel in excellence-(this is putting it simply, ahem).
They closely studied people who were outstanding at what they did, and investigated the 'how' they acheived this. Language patterns were then developed on the basis of what these people excelled in. The 'Milton Model'is
based on the outstanding Hypnotherapist Milton H. Erickson, who with exceptionally skilled use of 'artfully vague'
language could bypass the conscious mind and (putting it simply) speak to the unconscious mind.
When
we are fully awake and present we are conscious-however, we, as humans, are much more than that. It has been
discovered that the conscious mind can process 7 ( + or - 2) bits of information a second,it is thought though we are being
'assaulted' with 2 million bits of information a second! The unconscious mind copes with this by deleting, distorting, and
generalising our experience.
With our experience duly chunked down into 'bite size pieces' so
we can cope and not have 'information overload',we may speak in a generalised way eg; "Nobody
likes me!" "I am not comfortable" (deletion)... not comfortable about what!? Or
"You don't like me." (distortion) - how do you know I don't?
The brilliant therapist,
Virginia Satir realised such language could effect the persons perception to what is happening outside of them. So
the 'Meta Model' was born as a type of 'questioning' to recover these deletions, distortions, and generalisations
and the use of which, can actually change a persons way on how they see or feel about something. It has been said that
in essence our conscious mind is like a basic laptop, whilst our unconscious is like a super, super computer. We still
breathe when asleep and our hearts pump at the correct speed for us individually, the digestive system etc are all good examples
of the difference between conscious (awake state) and unconscious (being awake and everything else it means to be
you)
When broken down, NLP means this;
Neuro - This is the nervous system through
which our experience of the outer world is interpreted for each of us, through the following five senses; 1) Visual (Sight). 2) Auditory (sound). 3) Kinaesthetic (touch, also the way we 'feel'). 4) Olfactory (Smell). 5) Gustatory
(Taste).
Linguistic Language and other systems, which determine how we 'encode'
our experiences, and literally help us 'make sense' of why, what, and how, we do what we do.For example; Pictures
Sounds Feelings Tastes Smells words (including self talk)
Programming This is the way we act towards ourselves and others within our minds to achieve results, and create outcomes
that we desire.
THE NLP COMMUNICATION MODEL
How we make 'sense' of our outside world/experiences using our senses.
Strategies
In NLP it is believed that we have 'strategies' for all of our behaviours.
For example when we get motivated, we may in our minds 'see' a picture, this in turn may create a 'feeling',
we then can have a bit of 'self talk' and proceed with our own individual way of being/doing motivation (behaviour). This
all generally happens at the unconscious level and we 'automatically' then go about doing what behaviour we do.
NLP practitioners understand that what we see, hear, feel, are the results of outside experiences of the world (triggers) being
processed by the mind in the form of filters* in the brain, these filters create (Internal representations-I/R's)
in our mind -(what we see, feel, hear). Creating our state of mind (happy,sad,excited,etc..). this further
effects our physiology, and how we behave towards a internal/external stimulus (trigger).
We can see
from this, if a behaviour is not useful to us or holding us back, the way we do our behaviour needs to be changed or at least
fine tuned!
* Filters
These are part of our unconscious (as previously mentioned), and unconscious
filters consist of the following; Time/space, matter/energy, Language, Memories, Decisions, Meta
programs, Values & Beliefs, Attitudes.
Simply put, changing how we think, will change how we
feel.
"If we think we can do something or can't, we are right". Henry ford.
If we believe we can't do something we will get the feelings to support this belief.
Try
it for yourself..think of something you personally think/believe you can't do. Did you get a picture in your mind
or a feeling? (Depending on what it is you are thinking of, for example you are afraid of heights: How do you feel
when you imagine being at the top of the Eiffel tower?)
I would bet you didn't feel too good..
The good news is by changing the pictures in our mind, it can 'change' the way we behave/feel about
(in the above instance, inappropriate fear of heights).
Now think of something that makes you feel really passionate,
or really happy. Do you notice, or get a picture? If you could 'get that picture' so realistically, and
make it so compelling that you were actually in the picture of your 'happy place'.. looking through
your own eyes,..hearing what you can hear there,.. and feeling what you feel there,..I would bet that
was a different 'sensation/feeling/experience !
